Abundant Intelligence, Accelerating Complexity,
and the Loss of Human Meaning
MIKE UNHINGED 9
What many people still are not seeing
is that AI does not merely increase productivity.
It increases complexity.
Not just a little.
In every form.
More speed.
More interdependence.
More abstraction.
More opacity.
More systems talking to systems.
More decisions made upstream
from ordinary human awareness.
That changes the real issue.
The issue is no longer only
whether AI will replace jobs.
The deeper issue is whether
human beings, in general,
are developmentally suited
to live well inside environments
saturated with accelerating complexity.
If most people operate
somewhere below L13
most of the time,
then abundant intelligence
may push society
into conditions that exceed
ordinary human
meaning-making capacity.
That means people may continue to:
work,
consume,
click,
comply,
and perform—
without truly understanding
what is shaping their choices,
their values,
their identity,
or their sense of reality.
And when that happens,
something deeper
begins to erode.
Life loses coherence.
Work loses meaning.
Play loses significance.
Why?
Because “humaning”
depends on more than output.
It depends on orientation.
Without orientation,
abundant intelligence
can become a civilizational
force multiplier for
confusion,
dependency,
and subtle dehumanization.
This is why I believe
purpose,
self-knowledge,
and Generative Inquiry
are no longer optional luxuries.
They are becoming
orientation disciplines
for the age of abundant intelligence.
A few will learn
to work with AI
in ways that elevate life.
Many more
may be swept into the mire
of accelerating complexity
without fully realizing
what is happening.
That is the real danger.
Not merely
that AI gets smarter.
But that the human world
becomes too complex
to remain meaningful
to the humans living inside it.
At LeadU,
this is one of the central questions
we are working on:
How do we help people remain
oriented, purposeful,
and deeply human
in the face of abundant intelligence?
