Reiss Motivation Profile (RMP)
The Reiss Motivation Profile® (RMP) is a scientifically validated tool that maps out an
individual’s unique configuration of intrinsic motives, offering deep insight into what truly
drives human behavior. Developed by psychologist Dr. Steven Reiss, the RMP is based on
the premise that every person is motivated by a unique combination of basic life motives,
and that understanding these motives allows for greater clarity in personal choices,
leadership, and interpersonal relationships.
The RMP measures 16 basic desires, including Power (desire for influence), Curiosity
(intellectual exploration), Order (structure), Social Contact (companionship), Status
(recognition), Tranquility (emotional calm), and Acceptance (desire to be included). Each
motive is measured along a continuum, indicating how strongly or weakly it is expressed in
a given individual. This produces a personalized motivational map that captures what feels
deeply meaningful, energizing, or frustrating to a person.
What distinguishes the RMP is its focus on intrinsic motivation—those internal, stable
drivers that remain relatively consistent over time. Unlike external motivators such as
money or praise, intrinsic motives shape the choices people make when no one is watching.
By uncovering these motives, the RMP offers a powerful lens for aligning personal goals
with authentic values.
In leadership development and coaching, the RMP helps uncover why certain tasks energize
or drain an individual. A leader high in Curiosity may thrive in innovation, while one high in
Social Contact may excel in relationship management. Team friction often dissolves when
motivational differences are clarified and respected.
The RMP normalizes motivational diversity. It doesn’t rank motives as better or worse but
highlights individual differences in what fulfills us. Some people are driven by structure,
others by spontaneity. Some seek influence, others peace of mind. All are valid and, when
understood, help people make better decisions about career fit, life satisfaction, and team
roles.
The RMP also reveals the invisible tensions behind burnout or disengagement. When daily
tasks conflict with core motives, energy declines. For instance, a person who scores low on
Order but works in a rigid environment may feel stifled. Identifying this friction creates
opportunities to realign work with personal meaning.
In sum, the Reiss Motivation Profile is not simply a personality test—it is a motivational
blueprint. By revealing the why behind behavior, it guides people toward a more aligned,
energized, and purpose-driven life.
